Community Unites for ‘Bag It Bin It’ Awareness Day in Drogheda

With the sun peeking through and spirits high, the local community came together on Sunday, 10th August, for a vibrant ‘Bag It Bin It’ Awareness Day at St Dominic’s Park in Drogheda.

The event, part of the wider ‘Bag It Bin It’ campaign, aimed to educate the public on the importance of cleaning up after pets, reducing dog fouling in shared spaces, and promoting a cleaner, safer environment for everyone.

The afternoon was packed with engaging activities, including a lively performance by the Drogheda Brass Band, a dog show featuring categories such as Best Trick, Handsomest Male, Prettiest Female, Golden Oldie, and Waggiest Tail, and dog-themed face painting for children.

A custom Instagram photo frame helped spread the ‘Bag It Bin It’ message across social media, while giveaways like dog coats and bone-shaped bag dispensers were handed out to those who pledged their support.

Information stands hosted by Drogheda Animal Rescue and local litter wardens offered valuable advice and resources to pet owners, reinforcing the importance of responsible pet care.

David Conway, Chief Executive of Louth County Council, praised the initiative, saying: “Events like ‘Bag It Bin It’ show how powerful community action can be in addressing everyday challenges. Dog fouling isn’t just unpleasant; it’s a public health issue. The strong turnout today sends a clear message: we care about our environment, our neighbours, and our pets. Louth is setting a great example in civic pride and responsible pet ownership.”

Paula Gribben, Environmental Awareness Officer with Louth County Council, added: “This campaign is about more than just cleaning up after dogs; it’s about fostering respect for our shared spaces. The enthusiasm and support we saw today prove that people want to be part of the solution. It’s inspiring to see families, pet owners, and community groups working together to keep our parks clean and welcoming.”
