Megalithic Monuments

Louth is amzingly rich in Megalithic monuments for such an intensively-farmed county. Part of the buffer zone of the World Heritage Site of Brú na Bóinne falls within County Louth. There are many 'granges' within the World Heritage Site, showing that all this land was once a 'grange' or monastic grain-growing farm belonging to the mediaeval monastery of Mellifont in County Louth. There are many other Neolithic and bronze age tombs in the county, of which the most famous is probably Proleek dolmen. The Cooley Mountains are particularly rich in monuments.
