Placenames Committee

The Placenames Committee of Louth County Council was established by agreement of this Council at their meeting of 16th June 2008. This Committee was established under Section 51 of the Local Government Act, 2001 which allows the establishment of a committee to,  “consider matters connected with the functions of the authority referred to it by the authority and to assist and advise the authority on those matters”.

The original principal was derived from our adopted Irish Language Scheme which proposed to have such a Committee to promote the use of the Irish Language.  A secondary consideration was the principal of avoiding the use of duplicate or similar names in different parts of the county. This is critical for the emergency services were all emergency calls for the Principal Response Agencies are now fed into national call centres were previous local knowledge is now lost.
