Africa Day celebrations take place across Louth

Louth County Council welcomed Africa Day 2024 celebrations which featured events held across County Louth from Friday 22nd May to Sunday 24th May 2024.

This year migrant led community groups such as Culture Connect and The African Culture Centre (Dundalk) ran events around the county.

It was the first year that an event was held in the mid Louth area and it proved a great success with many attending the event on Friday 22nd May at the Ardee Parish Centre to celebrate African music, dance, crafts and cuisine.

Events to mark Africa Day were also held in Dundalk and Drogheda over the weekend with a mixture of entertainments and attractions to celebrate Ireland’s growing links with the continent of Africa.

All events were free of charge and celebrated African cultures and the positive impact of the African diaspora in Ireland. Funding towards some events was provided by the Department of Foreign Affairs in conjunction with Irish Aid and administered by Louth County Council Community Office.

Sean Fleming, Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, said:   “Africa Day is an important event to celebrate Ireland’s growing links with the continent of Africa, and to showcase African culture, music, dance and much more. Ireland has growing trade, political and cultural links across the continent of Africa. Africa Day is an opportunity to promote those links and learn more about the diversity and vibrancy of African cultures.”
