River Flood Advisory

Met Éireann has issued a High River Flood Advisory for County Louth.

Out-of-bank flooding, exceeding known flood levels, is expected on rivers, with coastal areas expected to exceed Highest Astronomical Tides (HAT) due to storm conditions.

There is a high risk of river flooding from midnight on Tuesday, 27 January to 9am on Thursday, 29 January, due to saturated ground and heavy, persistent rainfall.

Rainfall accumulations of 30mm to 40mm are expected in 24 hours between Monday into Tuesday, with higher accumulations likely over higher ground.

Rainfall over the past week was between 300-420% above average in the impacted areas. This has already saturated soils, which will significantly increase surface runoff and lead to rapid rises in river levels.

Flashier mountainous catchments are likely to respond quickly to the intensity of the rainfall. Larger rivers will continue to rise through Tuesday, Wednesday and into Thursday, increasing the potential for rivers to exceed their banks and for flooding to occur in known flood-prone areas. This may lead to floodplains, agricultural land and low-lying roads being flooded.

Close monitoring of river gauges and local weather conditions is strongly advised, particularly in areas where ground saturation and limited drainage capacity may exacerbate flooding impacts.
