Louth County Council Launches Library Service Development Programme 2026–2030
Louth County Council launched the Louth County Council Library Service Development Programme 2026–2030: Building for the Future, on August 27th in Ardee Library. This five-year strategic plan will guide the future development of library services across County Louth and ensure libraries continue to play a vital role in community life.
The programme sets out an ambitious vision for library services in Louth, focusing on inclusion, lifelong learning, digital innovation, community engagement and the continued development of welcoming library spaces for all.
Developed through a comprehensive consultation process involving almost 1,000 members of the public, community groups, educators, elected representatives, library staff and partner organisations, the Programme reflects the priorities and aspirations of the people of County Louth.
Speaking at the launch Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Cllr Dolores Minogue, welcomed the new Programme saying:
"Libraries are among the most valued public services in our communities. They provide opportunities for learning, personal development, social inclusion and cultural participation. This Programme demonstrates Louth County Council's commitment to ensuring our library service remains innovative, accessible and responsive to the needs of our growing and diverse population."
Amanda Branigan, County Librarian and Head of Cultural Services, added:
"Our libraries are trusted, welcoming spaces that support reading, learning, creativity and community connection. This Development Programme provides a clear roadmap for the next five years and will help ensure that our services continue to evolve to meet the changing needs of the people of Louth. We are proud of what our libraries have achieved over the last five years and excited about the opportunities ahead."
The Programme builds on a period of significant achievement for Louth County Council Library Service, which has seen increased visitor numbers, expanded opening hours, the opening of the new Dunleer Library, and the recognition of Louth as Ireland's first Library Authority to receive Library of Sanctuary status.
With a county-wide network comprising libraries in Drogheda, Dundalk, Ardee, Dunleer and Carlingford, together with the Schools Library Service and the forthcoming Library in the Community mobile service, Louth County Council Library Service continues to provide essential access to information, learning, culture and community engagement for people across the county.
