Louth County Council Launches New Play Policy on National Play Day

Louth County Council has launched its Play Policy 2026-2031 at the National Play Day 2026 celebrations in Cooley Kickham's GFC, County Louth. The policy sets out a five-year plan to support accessible, inclusive and high-quality play opportunities across the county.
The policy recognises that play is important at every stage of life. It supports the health, wellbeing and social connections of children, young people, adults and older people.
Developed through consultation with children, young people, families, community groups and other stakeholders, the new play policy identifies a strong demand for more inclusive, accessible and intergenerational play opportunities throughout County Louth.
Speaking at the launch, Cllr Andrea McKevitt, Cathaoirleach of Dundalk Municipal District, said:
“National Play Day is the ideal occasion to launch this important policy for County Louth. Play brings people of all ages together, supports wellbeing and helps build stronger communities. Our vision is that by 2031, Louth will be a county where everyone can play everywhere. This policy sets out clear actions to help achieve that vision and to deliver more inclusive, accessible and high-quality play opportunities for the people of County Louth. By working together, we can create places and spaces where everyone has the opportunity to play, connect and enjoy an active community life."
Joanna Kelly, Director of Services with Louth County Council, added:
“This policy reflects community priorities and provides a clear framework for developing play opportunities across County Louth over the next five years. Our focus is now on delivery through targeted investment, strong partnerships and collaboration, creating more inclusive, accessible and high-quality opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to play, connect and be active. In doing so, we are investing in healthier communities, improved wellbeing and a better quality of life for current and future generations.”
