Large Turnout for Presentation on West Gate House

9, 10, 17, 23, 24 Community Historian Brendan Matthews delivers his presentation, The Storied History of West Gate House, at the Civic Offices, Drogheda.

A large audience gathered at the Civic Offices in Drogheda on Wednesday, 23 September, for The Storied History of West Gate House, a special presentation by community historian Brendan Matthews.

Hosted by Louth County Council, the event explored the rich history of West Gate House, one of Drogheda's most distinctive heritage buildings and a landmark structure currently being revitalised under the THRIVE (Town Centre First Heritage Revival Scheme) programme.

Drawing on extensive historical research, Brendan Matthews shared fascinating insights into the building's past and its role in the social and architectural development of Drogheda.

Following the presentation, attendees took part in a guided walking tour of the surrounding area, learning more about the history and heritage of the town's western quarter.

Cllr Declan Power, Mayor of the Borough District of Drogheda, said: “Although I was unable to attend in person, I was delighted to hear of the tremendous interest shown in The Storied History of West Gate House. The strong attendance reflects the deep interest that people have in Drogheda's rich history and heritage. West Gate House is an important part of our town's story, and initiatives such as this help connect our communities with the buildings, places and stories that have shaped Drogheda over generations. I would like to thank Brendan Matthews for sharing his research and all those who attended and contributed to a very enjoyable evening."

The event formed part of ongoing efforts to promote awareness of the heritage significance of West Gate House and the wider regeneration opportunities being delivered through the THRIVE programme in Drogheda.

West Gate House is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the ERDF Southern, Eastern & Midland Regional Programme 2021-2027.
