Eastern & Midlands Regional Waste Management Plan

Launch of the Eastern-Midlands Region Waste Management Plan 2015-2021

For the purposes of waste management planning, Ireland is now divided into three regions: Eastern-Midlands Region, Southern Region & Connacht-Ulster Region. 

The Eastern-Midlands Region includes the following 12 local authorities: Dublin City, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal, South Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath and Wicklow.

The Eastern-Midlands Region Waste Management Plan 2015-2021 provides a framework for the prevention and management of waste in a sustainable manner in Louth and the other local authority areas. Following public consultation, the final plan was launched on May 14th 2015.

The three key targets of the Eastern-Midlands Region Waste Management Plan are:

1. Reduce Household Waste

1% Reduction Per Annum in the Quantity of Household Waste Generated Over The Period of the Plan.

2. Recycle More

Increase the Reuse and Recycling Rate of Municipal Waste to 50% by 2020.

3. Less to Landfill

Reduce to 0% the direct disposal of unprocessed residual Municipal waste to Landfill from 2016 onwards

The plan’s implementation will be led by the new Eastern-Midlands Regional Waste Office based in Dublin City Council.
