Under the “Household Food Waste and Bio-Waste Regulations 2015”, householders in the agglomerations of Carlingford, Castlebellingham/Kilsaran, Collon, Dromiskin, Knockbridge, Louth Village, Omeath, Tallanstown, Termonfeckin and Tullyallen will be legally obliged from 1st July 2016 to source segregate food waste (cooked and uncooked) and keep it separate from other wastes. Once food waste has been segregated, the regulations require the householder to ensure that the segregated food waste is either:
· Collected by an authorised waste collector
· Subjected to a home composting process
· Brought to an authorised facility for treatment.
In addition, this legislation stipulates that the householder shall not deposit food waste in the residual waste bin (i.e. black bin). Any person who contravenes these regulations is guilty of an offence.
Louth County Council has contacted all of the waste collectors operating in the agglomerations of Carlingford, Castlebellingham/Kilsaran, Collon, Dromiskin, Knockbridge, Louth Village, Omeath, Tallanstown, Termonfeckin and Tullyallen in relation to these regulations, and all of these waste collectors provide a brown bin for segregated food waste. Please check with your individual waste collector for details of the brown bin size and the full list of materials accepted in the brown bin.
